Happy Birthday to Me

Today's my birthday, and how am I spending it?  Looking out the windows and watching it rain.  Also checking out the back yard to make sure it is not flooding -- well after another hour or two of rain it is filling up.  The run off from the street is having trouble  keeping up with the downpour.

These photos show some of this:

This is what is causing all of this rain. the yellow patch close to the name Mobile is what is coming down now. I live close to the Alabama line.

All of my kids and grandkids have called to wish me a happy one and sang to me.  There are many things to be thankful for.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Noon, August 29, 2012 - it continues to rain.  Water is coming up towards my house from all directions.  Low tide is around 7 PM, so we are all hoping that the water will begin to recede by then.  I know that lots of people in Texas and other places need the rain.  We would be happy to send some your way if we could.

Some pictures around my house:

11th Street Directly Behind My House

A canal runs along 11th Street up to Parsley.  It has overflowed and is up in the front yards of the houses on 11th street.

I am being optimistic that it will not reach my street.

Things to be thankful for:  electricity, cool house, no water on street, family and friends checking in on me.

Update later.

Waiting for Isaac

This is late afternoon on Tuesday, August 28.  It has rained off and on all day, but nothing serious.  The canal, one block over, is flooded and I will have to watch that through the night.  I have tried to stay busy.  I started quilts for my twin great nephew and niece, Owen and Paige, two year ago this coming November.  I had completed one of the about a year ago, so I pulled out the material for the second one today and put it together.

The picture below shows the one I completed today, the second photo shows the top I finished some time ago.  I think I will have to add a six inch border on the right and left sides, but other than that they are ready to be quilted.  It would be nice to get these quilted and in the mail to them before their second birthday.

I also pulled out my 12 BQA blocks and grouped them to see how well they play together.  Next week is the last block, then we will be putting it together.  I think we will be connecting blocks on-point.  I have never tried that so I am looking forward to learning how to do this.

The wind has gusted up to 30-40 mph, according to the weather channel.  We still have electricity, but things could get worse as the night progresses.

Until next time..........

Catching Up on BQA Blocks

Its been a while since I posted.  Life has just gotten in the way.  Today I had a chance to catch up on the Beginning Quilt Along Blocks.  Block 10 was completed on time, but blocks 9 and 11 were late.  Block 12 is this week's block.  It feels good to be caught up on this challenge.

Block 9 - Meet Me at the Fair - aka Split Nine Patch

Block 10 - Ride the Roller Coaster - aka Quartered Star

Block 11 - Read Books all Summer - aka Hour Glass

Block 12 - Ride Bikes all Summer - aka Jacob's Ladder

Hope you are finding time to get in some quilting.  Until next time.....

Fun with the Grandkids....

The past week has been such a wonderful time for me.  My grandkids came to Pascagoula for a week, then I brought them back home to South Carolina.  We are on a mini family vacation.  It is great to be with my boys and their family.

We are having a blast at the Great Wolf Lodge in North Carolina.

Night Blooming Cerus

Finally got to see my Night Blooming Cereus cacti bloom.  It measured six inches across and smelled so good.

It finally opened around midnight.  I had set the alarm for three nights in a row trying to see it open.  It's magnificent bloom is over before daylight.

This is the third bloom this year for this plant, but the first one I have seen.  It is difficult to take pictures in the dark, but I am pleased with the ones I got.
